Fitzroy Island can be found in the Malbon Thompson Mountain Range which is located behind Cairns. It can be found about 18 nautical miles southeast of Cairns. It is an affordable holiday filled with beautiful scenery, exquisite dining, and good times.

Many people do not realize that their island vacation actually takes place on the top of a mountain that has been submerged under water. At one time, it was part of the mainland but separated at the end of the Ice Age. Ice caps melted and the valley between Fitzroy and the other mountains was flooded when the ocean rose because of that melting. This left Fitzroy Island isolated from the other mountains and created the island retreat.

The Gunghandji Aboriginal people living on the mainland believe that the island is spiritually significant. They believe that a person named Gulnyjarubay named the island Gabara, which means “the fist.” This symbolized that the lower portion of the island/mountain had been submerged and all that remained above water was “the fist.” These people hunted and fished on the island and are still involved with it today.

Fitzroy is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or just a little time off from the hustle and bustle of life. Visitors to Fitzroy will enjoy a tropical climate with the majority of the island’s rain falling between January and March. Temperatures average upper 70s to mid 80s all year round.

The island is covered with a rainforest that is home to a number of tropical fish and birds. Guests can go on any number of walks throughout the various scenic areas on the island. With rainforest plants and animals, the scenery alone provides hours of entertainment.

Fitzroy Island offers a number of activities for the whole family, such as snorkeling and other amenities at the resort. However, there are other activities that may be more suitable for adult vacationers such as a nude beach walk. Whatever your style, you are sure to find something enjoyable on the island!
