Fraser Island has a rich history and a beautiful sub-tropical climate which both make visitors flock to the island. As a World Heritage site and the largest sand island in the world, it boasts some of the most beautiful environments in the world.

Fraser Island was formed sometime during the Ice Age. Strong winds carried great amounts of sand from New South Wales and dropped it on the coast of Queensland, thus forming Fraser Island.

Fraser Island was named after Mrs. Eliza Fraser, the wife of Captain James Fraser. On June 26, 1836, the Frasers and others aboard their ship landed on what was then Great Sandy Island while on the way from Sydney to Singapore. Some sources say they were shipwrecked; others say they landed for water.

Once on the island, all of the people were captured by local Aborigines. For over two months, the Frasers and crew members were tortured and/or killed. Captain Fraser died at the hand of the Aborigines. One crew member managed to escape to nearby Moreton Bay and brought a search party to rescue Eliza Fraser. She moved to England and wrote a book of her experiences, which is popular in Australian culture. The island was later renamed in her honor.

With ancient Aboriginal sites and amazing wildlife, there is much to see on Fraser Island. Guests can enjoy the lakes and white sandy beaches as well as the dune system. With a rich cultural heritage and beautiful scenery, Fraser Island is being protected for guests to continually enjoy.
