Lizard Island - Queensland - Islands of Australia

Lizard Island was once considered a sacred place known a Syiigurra to the Aboriginal people who once spent time there. They believed it had been created during “Dreamtime.” The island was used to the initiation of younger males and to harvest shellfish, dugongs, fish, and turtles.

Lizard Island was first discovered by Europeans when Captain Cook found a passageway to the island. He named it Lizard Island after writing home that he the only land animals he had seen were lizards. He described it as a rocky and barren land.

The island began being used by Beche de mer fishermen in the 1860s. They had discovered that the waters were home to many sea cucumbers. They harvested these because sea cucumbers were a popular delicacy in Asia.

Captain Robert Watson build a home on the island in 1879. He, his wife, a servant, and daughter made a life for themselves there. He was a beche-de-mer and was away from the home working while Aborigines attacked the family at the cottage. Mrs. Watson tried to escape in a rectangular tub with her servant and child, but all three died of thirst.

Lizard Island was named a national park in 1939. Guests now visit the popular Lizard Island Resort to wander the shores or enjoy one of the many walks on the island. Many deep sea fisherman also call Lizard Island home.
