North Stradbroke Island has an amazing combination of rugged coastlines, peaceful lakes, and white sandy beaches, North Stradbroke Island is one of the most spectacular vacation destinations in Queensland. The village atmosphere gives guests exactly the getaway they desire.

The local inhabitants refer to the island simply as Straddie Island. It is comprised of three townships – Point Lookout, Amity Point, and Dunwich. Point Lookout is a series of beaches and is home to the annual migration path of the humpback whales. Amity Point is a calm place on North Stradbroke Island’s bayside. Dunwich is a small historical area with much to see and do. Each township offers something a little different for guests.

Guests can spend time enjoying the scenery or chatting with the local people. Residents are more than happy to share their own stories of living permanently on the island. It is interesting to hear of life in paradise but so close to the big city!

North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum – The Historical Museum showcases North Stradbroke Island’s rich history. Guests can view items that tell about the Aboriginal history, shipwrecks and mining industry.

Dunwich Cemetery – Located near the Historical Museum, this is the second oldest cemetery in Queensland. Available upon arrival is a map that will lead guests to the resting place of many of North Stradbroke’s most influential dwellers.

Fig Tree Art Gallery – The art gallery can be found under the fig tree in Dunwich. It features contemporary art created by the island’s own Ken and Jen Stubblety and includes prints, paintings, and sculptures.

Brown Lake – This lake is naturally a “tea” colored brown, caused by the natural surroundings. They have picnic areas and amazing scenery.

The Keyholes – This system of lakes and lagoons is home to a number of native birds. Guests can also swim or participate in other water sports in this area.

Myora Springs – Myora Springs is a fresh water area that runs and is home to the False Water Rat, which is a rare nocturnal mammal that was thought to be extinct until 1978.

Eighteen Mile Swamp – This swamp goes from the Keyholes to the southern end of the island. It is home to a number of the island’s wildlife and gives guests an opportunity to view many of them.

There are a variety of tours in which guests can participate. Below is a list of many of the most popular tours on North Stradbroke Island.

Mal Starkey’s Point Lookout Fishing Charter – This 6 hour fishing tour departs from Point lookout. Guests can fish within 5 minutes of leaving. Costs include bait, tackle, and light snacks.

Straddie Kingfisher Tours – Guests can choose from a half-day or full-day tour along the beach in a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Costs include morning or afternoon tea for the half-day tours and morning and afternoon tea plus lunch for the full-day tour.

Sunrover Expeditions – A full-day tour in a 4 wheel drive vehicle allows guests the change to see North Stradbroke Island’s inland lakes. This is approximately an 8 hour tour with plenty of time to relax, explore, and swim.
