South Molle Island - Queensland - Islands of Australia

South Molle Island originated from the melting of polar caps during the Ice Age separated the Whitsunday Islands from the mainland. South Molle Island is one of the 74 resulting islands. It is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

The island was named after Colonel George James Molle who was one the Lieutenant Governor of New South Wales. There are a number of islands named after him, including South Molle, North Molle, Mid Molle, and West Molle (now Daydream Island).

South Molle Island is home to a number of National Park areas which include walking trails. Guests can spend hours touring the island on foot. All will enjoy the secluded beaches and bushwalking.

The island also has many large hills from which guests can enjoy a view of all of the surrounding waters. These hills include Spion Kop, The Horn, Mount Jeffreys, and Lamond Hill. In addition, South Molle Island is connected to Goat Island during low tide times.

Island Restaurant – This resort restaurant offers a daily buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Guests can purchase meal packages with resort reservations. They also offer a Friday evening seafood buffet.

Island Café – The café serves meals and snacks including sandwiches, ice cream, milkshakes, and coffee.

Picnic Baskets Option – Guests can order picnic baskets from the resort to be carried along various trails and beaches on the island.

Daily tours are available from the resort to view the Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven Beach, and Whitsunday Islands. Resort staff can arrange these for guests upon arrival.

South Molle Island offers over 30 free activities for guests. These activities range from water sports to athletic activities to walking tracks. Guests can play golf, tennis, soccer, football, and volleyball or can use the gym or pool. There is also beach badminton and beach cricket as well as water polo. There are paddle skis available and they offer windsurfing and catamarans. Guests will also enjoy free nightly entertainment.

Guests can also go feed the birds and fish or choose from one of the many walking tracks. The walking tracks include trails to many of the hills on the island, and guests can view the surrounding waters from these hilltops. The highest point on the island can be found at the top of Mount Jeffreys.

Finally, guests may choose to purchase equipment and/or lessons for parasailing, diving, waterskiing, and other motorized water equipment.

South Molle Island offers a number of amenities for visitors’ convenience. There are internet facilities, postal service, complimentary beach towels, and a guest laundry facility. They also provide complimentary bug spray to help guests deal with the common insects due to the tropical climate of the island.

Guests can access South Molle Island from Hamilton Island. There is a 30 minute launch trip available. In addition, guests can come from Proserpine Airport where they will take a bus to Shute Harbour and then take a 20 minute launch trip.
