Carnac Island was once a whaling station, these days it is a protected marine haven and a nature reserve, home to a very large population of sea lions.  Carnac Island has restrictions on visitors to the Island, visitors are only allowed accompanied by the exclusive Island tour operators.

Carnac Island current day is a day tour Island, similar to many protected Islands in the region. Carnac Island is a protected wildlife haven, it has a very large population of Sea Lions, Bottlenose Dolphins, Sea Gulls, Terns and Tiger Snakes.

The tiger snake is one of the most deadliest snakes in the world.

Carnac Island history dates back to the 19th century when it was discovered by a French explorer, in subsequent years other explorers named and renamed the Island, the current day name of Carnac Island is attributed to John Rivett Carnac who was a second lieutenant on HMS Success.

During the early 19th century Carnac Island was used as a penal settlement, this was the period when that region of Australia was discovered, In subsequent years the Island was used as a whaling station.
